Stages Theatre

STAGEStheatre is a non-profit organization based around Fullerton CA. There have been hundreds of shows there, including American classics, comedies, tragedies, Shakespeare, absurdist, and avant-garde theater, as well as original pieces. It is the oldest storefront theatre in Orange County, and it has staged hundreds of works there.

Founded in 1992 by Brian Kojac, STAGES theatre has been performing since then. At first, it was only a modest room where actors could practice their profession. However, many students (and previous students), college instructors, and arts administrators from Orange County’s three high schools, community colleges, and universities have contributed to the productions. Over time, STAGEStheatre has established itself as a well-known artistic venue in Orange County.

STAGEStheatre began performing events in 1993 at an industrial complex in the northeastern part of Anaheim. Kojac gave the theatre the name “STAGES” as a nod to the various stages of life that one passes through in life. The following year, after 41 productions, the theatre expanded into a second space next door to the Anaheim location. Additionally to the traditional primetime season, the theatre offered late-night artistic shows.

By 1997, the theatre had staged 112 performances, with more than 90 original works. Two years later, STAGES theatre was able to graduate from its self-described “underground, independent” status and relocate to the storefront location on East Commonwealth Avenue that it presently occupies. Under the guidance of Patrick Gwaltney, the Managing Artistic Director, helped STAGES obtain non-profit status and adopted the name STAGES theatre. The theatre is administered by a Board of Directors, which oversees an Artistic Director and Executive Director and is fully staffed by volunteers.

Spectacles Improv Engine is an improvisation group that plays at the theater often, teaches improv workshops during the day, and organizes charity fundraisers like the Orange County Improv Cup and the Orange County Improv Festival, based in Irvine, California. Spectacles set a new world record for the longest-standing improv scene when they performed for 25 hours straight in late 2012.
